"What's a liberal?"
Brief conversation with child, age 8:
"A liberal is someone who believes in freedom. In equality. In protecting the environment and taking care of each other. A liberal thinks that people are as important as companies and that workers are as important as bosses. And a liberal believes it's okay for people to believe in god or not believe in god. Liberals think that it's okay to be the way you are and do what you do as long as you don't hurt others or the environment."

"What's a liberal?"
Good question. "I'm a liberal. Dad's a liberal."
"Is a liberal an adult?"
"Sometimes, but you don't have to be an adult to be a liberal."
"So what's a liberal, then?"
She looked at me as I waited for her eyes to roll back in her head. But they didn't. Usually my kids find themselves sorry they asked. But she was still looking at me with clear, brown eyes. "I'm a liberal," she said.
Then she paused. Perhaps she was thinking about her expected birthday gifts and didn't want to harm her chances of a decent haul.
"Why wouldn't everybody want to be a liberal?"
