There's HUNGER For Impeachment. Will We Feed It?
Participate in the National Poll on impeaching vice president Cheney.
VOTING ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/cheney_impeachment.php
With his usual visionary courage, in introducing H.Res. 333 Dennis Kucinich is saying what we all know, but which most of the rest of our behind the curve politicians are still too afraid to say. The Bush administration, and Richard B. Cheney in particular, has committed high crimes against the people and interests of the United States of unprecedented magnitude. We have created a VOTING action page on this issue which already has over 15,000 submissions just since yesterday.

George W. Bush and the Texas hold'em game
Here's a puzzle: If President Bush really thinks he's holding all the cards in his impending showdown with congressional Democrats over Iraq funding, why bother with a veto?
On previous occasions when Congress passed laws Bush found irksome, he's quietly issued "signing statements" declaring, in essence, that the president is a law unto himself. Statutes Bush doesn't like, he vows to ignore.

The GOP's cyber election hit squad
Did the most powerful Republicans in America have the computer capacity, software skills and electronic infrastructure in place on Election Night 2004 to tamper with the Ohio results to ensure George W. Bush's re-election?
The answer appears to be yes. There is more than ample documentation to show that on Election Night 2004, Ohio's "official" Secretary of State website which gave the world the presidential election results was redirected from an Ohio government server to a group of servers that contain scores of Republican web sites, including the secret White House e-mail accounts that have emerged in the scandal surrounding Attorney General Alberto Gonzales's firing of eight federal prosecutors.
Recent revelations have documented that the Republican National Committee (RNC) ran a secret White House e-mail system for Karl Rove and dozens of White House staffers. This high-tech system used to count and report the 2004 presidential vote from server-hosting contracts, to software-writing services, to remote-access capability, to the actual server usage logs themselves must be added to the growing congressional investigations.

There are more Americans living in poverty today
BAD GETTING WORSE: There are more Americans living in poverty today than there are total people living in the state of California, the most populous state in the nation. The number of poor Americans has grown by five million in the past six years, while inequality has reached historically high levels. In 2005, the richest one percent of Americans had the largest share of the nation's income -- 19 percent -- since 1929, while the poorest 20 percent of Americans had only 3.4 percent of the nation's income. Though the number of Americans in deep poverty has climbed slowly but steadily in the past three decades, a study by the American Journal of Preventative Medicine found that since 2000, "the number of severely poor has grown 'more than any other segment of the population.'

Guns or Butter – Truth and Consequences
Homelessness and hunger are issues most Chattanoogans prefer to not consider, until a crisis befalls them or someone they know. Most don’t realize that these issues are dramatically linked to decisions our political leaders make about war.
Thousands of local families live paycheck to paycheck, only 1 medical crisis or lost job away from needing services such as those provided by the Chattanooga Community Kitchen. Last year, the Kitchen served over 100,000 meals. Outreach coordinator Brother Ron Fender startles listeners by pointing out the average age of a homeless person is 9 years old.

Truth or Consequences play at Barking Legs
The play at the Barking Legs theater, Truth or Consequences, is a fund raiser for the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.
Thousands of Chattanoogans live paycheck to paycheck. They are just one medical crisis or lost job away from needing the safety net provided by the Community Kitchen, and our other local charities.
The play describes Truth and Consequences on several levels.
On the surface, it's an entertaining courtroom drama in which Bush and Cheney defend themselves against criminal charges of fraud about their case for initially invading Iraq.
On a deeper level, it's about the economic choices that were made, and that continue to be made.
The National Priorities Project web site lists the cost of the war, and describes how else we might have spent these dollars.
Here's a truth. In our 3d U.S. Congressional District, represented by Zach Wamp, through 2007 we will have spent $75 million dollars on the Iraq war.
Now consider the social opportunities that we've missed.
We want to build a better local economy, and to do that, attract good paying employers who are looking for well educated workers.
$75M could have paid for 4-year college scholarships for 140,000 students.
Or, it could have paid for 8,000 affordable housing units, or paid for the health care of 50,000 children during these past 4 years of the war.
These lost opportunities are the consequences of our choices.
There are many other global consequences. For example, foreign policy experts agree that our ongoint occupation actually increases the risk of terrorism to the U.S. because it's a great recruiting tool for Al Quada.
Please come see the play at the Barking Legs Theater, 1307 Dodds, tonight Saturday April 21, and next Friday - Saturday April 27-28 at 7:30.
Tickets are $10, or $8 and 2 canned goods.

Excerpt: Where Have All the Leaders Gone?
Had Enough? Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, "Stay the course." Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned Titanic. I'll give you a sound bite: Throw the bums out! You might think I'm getting senile, that I've gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore. The President of the United States is given a free pass to ignore the Constitution, tap our phones, and lead us to war on a pack of lies.Congress responds to record deficits by passing a huge tax cut for the wealthy (thanks, but I don't need it). The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs. While we're fiddling in Iraq, the Middle East is burning and nobody seems to know what to do. And the press is waving pom-poms instead of asking hard questions. That's not the promise of America my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for.

The fake fight over the Iraq War
Apr. 1- Has the end of America's war on Iraq been brought closer by the recent vote in the House of Representatives? On Mar. 23, the full House voted 218 to 212 to set a timeline on the withdrawal of US troops,
with Sept. 1, 2008, as the putative date after which war funding might be restricted to withdrawal purposes only. It's not exactly a stringent deadline. It only requires Bush to seek Congressional approval before extending the occupation and spending new funds to do so.

Political pendulum may be swinging in a more progressive direction
By NELL LEVIN - Tennessee Voices
For thirty years, our country has been engaged in a cultural war
between conservatives and progressives about how American society
should be organized.
The pillars of conservatism are strong defense, free markets, lower
taxes, smaller government, and family values. Linguist George Lakoff
says conservatism is based on the patriarchal family model with a
strict father whose role is to protect and support the family in a
dangerous world and teach his children right from wrong, using
punishment if necessary.

A Psychological Expose' of Creationism's Secret Genesis
A Newsweek poll reports this week that 48 percent of the American public rejects the scientific theory of evolution. That’s nearly half the voting public that can’t tell fact from fiction or reality from ideology. In order to save democracy, we’ve got to help these people to evolve.
We can begin by discrediting the pseudo-science known as creationism. This doctrine can be invalidated in the eyes of more people by exposing its emotional roots. It’s pointless to debate creationists on the specific tenets of their doctrine. Such an approach plays into their defensive strategy and overlooks the source in the psyche of their irrationality.

Bush/Cheney Still Lie with Abandon
What makes George W. Bush and Dick Cheney such extraordinary threats to the future of American democracy is their readiness to tell half-truths and outright lies consistently without any apparent fear of accountability.
While other politicians might spin some facts in a policy debate or a tell a fib about a personal indiscretion, President Bush and Vice President Cheney act as if they have the power and the right to manufacture reality itself, often on matters of grave significance that bear on war and peace or the future of the nation.

Sen Russ Feingold: Ratcheting up the pressure
By Senator Russ Feingold
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid did a great job getting the supplemental spending bill through the Senate last week. We were able to pass a bill with tough, binding language that forces the President to begin redeploying our troops from Iraq in 120 days. But our work is far from over – we have got to keep pushing to end the terrible mistake in Iraq. That next step has got to be Congress using its power of the purse to end the war.

Liberals push to impeach Bush
Congressional Democrats say their constituents are clamoring for something even the most liberal lawmakers promise they won't pursue: President Bush's impeachment.
"I get one call after another saying, 'Impeach the president,' " said Rep. John P. Murtha, Pennsylvania Democrat and one of Mr. Bush's most relentless critics on the Iraq war.
"It's a simple process but a very divisive thing," Mr. Murtha said. "You've got to measure what it's going to do to the country, and at this point I don't see that happening. Instead we'll fight it out on the issues."

Invest In Hope, America, Not Despair
By Jesse Jackson:
Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is a pretty good working definition of insanity. But that is the state of America’s failed policy for poor children. For the last 25 years, we’ve basically been following the punitive ideas coming from the right side of our politics. We’ve chosen to invest in punishment on the back side rather than hope on the front side. And the results are now in: Poverty is up; prison populations are up; costs are up. It doesn’t work.

US ready to strike Iran within days
The Guardian 4 April, 2007
Russian intelligence has information that the US Armed Forces have nearly completed preparations for a possible military operation against Iran, and will be ready to strike in early April, a security official said.
Official data says the US’s military presence in the region has reached the level of March 2003 when the US invaded Iraq.

Senate Democrats pledge to push withdrawal if Bush vetoes bill
WASHINGTON: AP - Senate Democratic leaders said Sunday they will keep pushing for a withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq even if President George W. Bush vetoes legislation calling for a pullout.
Meanwhile, the Senate's top Republican leader dismissed as unacceptable any legislation that sets deadlines for a troop withdrawal. He called on Democrats to cut short their Easter recess so lawmakers can quickly send a final version to Bush for a veto.
"This bill is not salvageable," said Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell.
