The Fed's Slight of Hand

"So concludes the Economist, this week's edition. It says that an average of 'all items' is going up not at 2% or 3% per year as the US government claims, but at 16.7% per year! Food is going up even faster - at 31.6%."

Impeach for Peace - Kucinich to bring resolution

Call your Congress Critter and ask them to vote to NOT table the resolution to debate HR333 on the House floor.

In this YouTube, Rep. Dennis Kucinich describes the process of how, within a few weeks, he'll force the issue of impeachment of Dick Cheney (HR333) on the floor of the U.S. House.

The likely scenario is that a congressperson will immediately make a parliamentary move to 'table' the motion. The vote on whether to 'table' the impeachment motion WILL BE THE IMPORTANT VOTE. If the motion is tabled, it's dead.

So, Kucinich is calling on every citizen (yes, that means you) to contact their representative to tell them to vote NOT to table the impeachment motion, but to let it be discussed on the floor of the U.S. House! Call Congress Toll Free at 800 828 0498.

In the last 2 months, gold has gone from $650 to $800 an ounce.

That represents a drop of over 20% in the value of the US dollar compared to gold... in just the past 2 months.

Gold was $460 a year ago.

The dollar has lost about 40% of its value compared to gold in the last 1 year.

Wonder why? Wonder what the effect will be on your life?

US Mint considering cheaper coins

Is copper expensive? Or is the value of the dollar crashing?
Noticed what's happening to the price of gold and silver?

The rising price of copper has prompted the US government to consider making coins with cheaper metals.

The US Mint says it is now costing as much as 1.7 cents to produce a "penny" (1 cent) and 10 cents to produce a "nickel" (5 cents).

Seven CIA Veterans Challenge 9/11 Commission Report

Official Account of 9/11 a “Joke” and a “Cover-up”

Seven CIA veterans have severely criticized the official account of 9/11 and have called for a new investigation. “I think at simplest terms, there’s a cover-up. The 9/11 Report is a joke,” said Raymond McGovern, 27-year veteran of the CIA, who chaired National Intelligence Estimates during the seventies. “There are a whole bunch of unanswered questions. And the reason they’re unanswered is because this administration will not answer the questions,” he said.

Immunity Deal Hampers Blackwater Inquiry

(We now have a private militia, immune from the rule of law. One more step towards fascism in America. - ed)

The State Department promised Blackwater USA bodyguards immunity from prosecution in its investigation of last month's deadly shooting of 17 Iraqi civilians, The Associated Press has learned.

The immunity deal has delayed a criminal inquiry into the Sept. 16 killings and could undermine any effort to prosecute security contractors for their role in the incident that has infuriated the Iraqi government.

Support Ron Paul's "American Freedom Agenda Act of 2007"

Call your Representative today and ask him to co-sponsor.

"Should we wander in moments of error or alarm, let us hasten to retrace our steps and regain the road which alone leads to peace, liberty, and safety." - Thomas Jefferson, upon repealing the "Alien and Sedition Acts"

The American Freedom Agenda Act (introduced by Representative Ron Paul) will:

* Repeal the Military Commissions Act of 2007 and thereby restore the ancient right of habeas corpus and end legally sanctioned torture by U.S. government agents

* Restore the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and thereby outlaw warrantless spying on American citizens by the President of the United States

* Give Congress standing in court to challenge the President's use of "signing statements" as a means to avoid executing the nation's laws

* Make it illegal for government agents to kidnap people and send them abroad to be tortured by foreign governments

* Provide legal protection to journalists who expose wrong-doing by the Federal government

* Prohibit the use of secret evidence to label groups or individuals as terrorists for the purpose of criminal or civil sanctions

If ever there was a bill that all Americans should support, it is this one.

American Freedom Campaign

The American Freedom Campaign is an organization that has as its goal to put restoration of the Constitution on the agenda for Democratic presidential candidates, roughly parallel to the goal of the American Freedom Agenda for Republican candidates, although Democratic and Republican candidates could sign on to both pledges. It was launched in July 2007 by The Center for Constitutional Rights, Human Rights Watch and MoveOn.

The group urges presidential candidates to sign its "American Freedom Pledge", which reads:

We are Americans, and in our America we do not torture, we do not imprison people without charge or legal recourse, allow our phones and emails to be tapped without a court order, and above all we do not give any President unchecked power. I pledge to fight to protect and defend the Constitution from assault by any President. The Constitution protects American Freedom. With checks and balances, and basic legal rights, it has prevented tyranny and safeguarded our liberty. Yet today, under the pretense of the "war on terror," the White House is dismantling the Constitution, concentrating power in the President and undermining the rule of law. THIS IS UN-AMERICAN. I hereby join the American Freedom Campaign to educate my neighbors about the threat and urge my representatives to confront and correct these abuses of our America.

War appropriations could reach $1 trillion

At their current rate, war appropriations could reach $1 trillion by the time Bush leaves office, a total that by some measures would exceed the cost of the Korean and Vietnam wars combined.

Most Americans oppose funding Bush's full war request, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll last month. Just a quarter of those surveyed supported the president's full spending plan, as it was then projected, and seven in 10 wanted it reduced. About 46 percent wanted it cut sharply or altogether.

The $45.9 billion Bush asked for yesterday comes on top of $150.5 billion already requested for the 2008 fiscal year that started Oct. 1. If passed, it would put the total cost of Iraq, Afghanistan and counterterrorism operations at $806 billion, more than any single U.S. conflict since World War II. A study by the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments last month said that in today's dollars the Persian Gulf war of 1991 cost $88 billion, the Korean War cost $456 billion and Vietnam cost $518 billion.

Sen. Chris Dodd's Make or Break Moment

By Dave Lindorff

President Bush is no chump. He has figured out how to emasculate the Democrats (those that aren't already eunuchs). Instead of making a decent estimate of the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and asking for it up front for the 2008 fiscal year, he is asking for it piecemeal, giving Democrats opportunity after opportunity to turn him down and end it all, knowing all the while that they'll cave and give him his war money.

How Progressives are different than Conservatives

The following is courtesy of Paul Waldman's excellent work, entitled
"Being Right Is Not Enough - What Progressives Must Learn From Conservative Success".

1) Progressives are working people, and conservatives are the elite. Standing for working people is not a statement of an agenda. It is a value from which agenda items flow. It’s not only about appealing to people’s self interest, it’s about appealing to what people believe government should do, and about the kind of public servants they’ll trust to do the right thing. Call conservatives “elite” and their ideas “elitist”. Make a case not only about what conservatives do, but about who they are.

Restoring Habeas Corpus

On September 19, 2007, the Senate voted on a cloture motion for including the Habeas Corpus Restoration Act as an amendment to the FY 2008 Defense Department Authorization bill. The final vote was 56-43, just four votes short of overriding the Republican filibuster.

Every Democrat voted for the bill as well as six Republicans. Those Republicans were Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), Gordon Smith (R-Ore.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), John Sununu (R-N.H.), and Arlen Specter (R-Penn.), who sponsored the bill.

The only non-Republican who voted against the bill was Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.).

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) stated that the Senate's passage of the Military Commissions Act, which suspended habeas corpus for detainees, "calls into question the United States' historic role of defender of human rights in the world. It accomplishes what opponents could never accomplish on the battlefield, whittling away our own liberties."

The Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007 was introduced by Chris Dodd, senator from Connecticut and candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, and by Senator Patrick Leahy.

It Saves Money and Makes Kids Healthy — What’s the Problem?

by Jesse Jackson

Nine million children go without health insurance in this country. A broad bipartisan majority in both houses of Congress, including such rock-ribbed conservatives as Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah and Chuck Grassley of Iowa, voted to expand the children’s health-care program to cover about half of those. Last week, President Bush vetoed the bill. In the Senate, enough Republicans will join Democrats to override that veto. The question is whether two-thirds support can be found in the House of Representatives. In partisan fervor, the Republican leadership has vowed to stand with the president.

US Income Gap Widens, Richest Share Hits Record

The gap between America’s richest and poorest is at its widest in at least 25 years, with the wealthiest taking home a record share of the nation’s income that exceeds even the previous high in 2000.

According to recent data from the Internal Revenue Service, the richest 1 percent of Americans earned 21.2 percent of all U.S. income earned in 2005. That is a significant increase from 2004 when the top 1 percent earned 19 percent of the nation’s income.

The previous high over the past 25 years, when such data were compiled, was in 2000 when a bull market brought the figure up to 20.81 percent.

The Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan tax research group based in Washington, said the wealthy benefited in 2005 from a healthy, growing economy and higher-than-average price inflation.

Maternal Mortality Shames Superpower US

United Nations - Despite its enormous wealth and highly advanced technology, the United States lags far behind other industrialised countries — and even some developing ones — in providing adequate health care to women during pregnancy and childbirth.

The U.S. ranks 41st in a new analysis of maternal mortality rates in 171 countries released by a group of U.N. public health experts on Friday. The survey shows that even a developing country like South Korea is ahead of the United States.

How to spot political ads powered only by hot air.

In this article we examine two examples of what we call "fact-free" advertising, which we see in abundance. These ads seek to associate the candidate with a string of positive words and images but are void of specifics. Voters should beware.

We have chosen an example from Republican Mitt Romney that is full of words such as “families,” “values,” “patriotic,” “strength” and “innovation.” Who could be against any of those? Romney is also squarely against “waste in the federal government,” but who isn't? And what does he consider "waste?" He doesn't say.

The gay voter's guide to the GOP

How should a right-wing homosexual vote in the upcoming primaries and caucuses?

Imagine this: You are a gay man or a lesbian woman who just can't stand Democrats. Maybe you are rich and you don't want anyone to raise your taxes. Perhaps you are just determined to stay the course in Iraq, privatize Social Security, and drop oil wells into the Alaskan wilderness. Jack Abramoff might even be an old drinking buddy.

It doesn't really matter. Whatever the cause, you are in a quandary. Your only viable choice in the coming presidential election is to vote for a Republican, and that means voting for a party that has spent much of the last decade casting you and your way of life as an assault on the wholesome goodness of the American family. "Homosexuality is incompatible with military service," declared the 2004 GOP platform. "Attempts to redefine marriage in a single state or city could have serious consequences throughout the country."

What is a right-leaning homosexual to do in this presidential election? Start by taking a closer look at the candidates in the Republican field. There is substantial variation, and not just in their positions on a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. Call it the Giuliani-Keyes Spectrum of Gay Friendliness. On one end, there is Rudy Giuliani, a former New York mayor who has lived with gay friends, favors gay domestic partnerships, and sometimes dresses in drag. At the other end, there is Alan Keyes, who calls lesbians "selfish hedonists," even though his only daughter is a lesbian. There exists, shall we say, a veritable rainbow of variation in between.

Values voters rake the GOP over the coals

Monday night in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the religious wing of the Republican Party hosted a Values Voter Debate, but none of the top-tier Republicans came. Why did Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson and John McCain dodge a chance to speak to the GOP base?

The answers can be given in the form of questions, which were posed by the debate organizers to the empty lecterns of the candidates who did not show. As Joseph Farah, the editor of WorldNetDaily, explained at the beginning of the three-hour program, "When you run for president, you can run but you can't hide."

Question for Giuliani, asked by a teenage girl with an apparent speech impediment:

"Eighteen years ago, an abortionist was hired to kill me, but he failed. Nuns came and rescued me and took me to the hospital, where I stayed for two months. My heroic parents then adopted me. Mayor Giuliani, your position on abortion would have left me dead. Now that you see me, Mayor Giuliani, do you honestly believe that an abortionist had a right to kill me?"

Why Isn't Campaign Finance THE Major Issue In 2008 Election?

If you look at the current presidential campaigns, all of the candidates, both parties, their campaigns/associates, the debates, moderators, pundits, talking heads, TV shows, blogs... and all of their associations, you will see that campaign-financing is easily the most important issue facing America in the next election.....or it should be.

Virtually every controversy, from haircuts to millions of dollars, facing the candidates and campaigns concern campaign finance and those involved in it. "The money" questions follow them everywhere, through the campaign and beyond.

Professor Steve Freeman Presentation On Stolen US Elections

Here's a video crash course on election fraud for those of you who are waking up to the fact of election fraud but can't find anything in the mainstream press. (

Professor Steven Freeman of the University of Pennsylvania, author of Was the 2004 Presidential Election Stolen?, spoke before the National Latino Congreso in Los Angeles last week and laid it all out quite clearly and succinctly.

A few highlights of his talk:

"You and we are in the process of losing the right to vote, and along with it, all our other rights."

"Elections can be stolen, have been stolen, and will continue to be stolen."

Programmers can now change literally millions of votes by simply changing two lines (out of millions of lines of code). They can instruct the program to delete those two lines afterwards without leaving a trace.

When you vote on a computerized election machine, your vote enters the machine and no one knows where it goes or what happens to it. The software is proprietary, meaning it is secret. The voting process cannot be independently observed by citizens nor can it be meaningfully monitored by anyone.

Congress Needs A Shot In The Arm

Among the most important public health advances of the past century has been the development of potent vaccines against dangerous and life-threatening illnesses. Polio, tuberculosis, and measles quickly come to mind. Through a process of inoculation, a small dose of the pathogen is intentionally administered to the patient which induces immunity against the full-blown disease.

In a similar way, social scientists have demonstrated that attitude inoculation can be used to prevent the transmission of hazardous beliefs and behaviors from one person to another. For example, research reveals that adolescents can more effectively resist pressure from cigarette-smoking peers if they are given role-playing opportunities in which they rehearse their responses to students pressuring them to smoke.

But today we are in urgent need of an inoculation campaign against an entirely different threat to our nation's health--namely, the Bush administration's exploitation of its "global war on terror" to eviscerate the rule of law and our constitutional checks and balances; to prolong the disastrous occupation of Iraq; and to lay the groundwork for military strikes against Iran. Ever since the tragic events of 9/11 six years ago, the White House has promoted this agenda by working non-stop to spread a simple yet infectious idea: All actions taken by this president and his representatives are necessary to protect the United States from future catastrophic terrorist attacks.

Americans charge it as Bank of Subprime closes

The automated teller for home loans is empty and Americans are relying increasingly on credit cards to pay their living costs, indicating tough hurdles ahead for U.S. consumer spending and markets.

Federal Reserve data released on Friday showed U.S. consumer borrowing rising by $12.18 billion in August, more than 20 percent more than economists had forecast.

Most striking was an 8.1 percent increase in borrowing on revolving credit lines, mostly credit cards, to a record $909 billion.

Credit card borrowings rose at the sharpest rate since early 2002.

Vicente Fox admits that he and George W. Bush have ’agreed’ on common currency, North American Union

Speaking on the Larry King show, former Mexican President Vicente Fox confirmed every assertion made by Jerome Corsi in his new book, NY Times bestseller "The Late Great U.S.A: The Coming Merger with Mexico and Canada" (WND Books, ISBNs 0-9790451-4-2, $25.95, July 2007). Not only did Fox admit that he and George W. Bush have "agreed" to create a common currency, the Amero, he contended that a North American Union is "inevitable" That’s something that Jerry Corsi takes issue with while applauding Fox’s openness on national television.

"At last we have public confirmation of the pernicious secret activity that’s been going on towards merging Mexico, Canada and the United States" declares Corsi, whose book became a bestseller shortly after publication. "Personally, I’d like to thank Vincente Fox. His candor about this merger is what’s going to stop it dead in its tracks"

Corsi continues, "Fox’s appearance with Larry King and, of all places, on The Daily Show constitutes the first time a leader of Mexico, Canada or the U.S. has openly confirmed a plan to create a regional currency called the Amero -- a plan I document in detail in ’The Late Great U.S.A.’" Fox went on to explain how current regional trade agreements between the United States and its hopelessly corrupt neighbor to the south are intended to evolve into other previously hidden aspects of North American integration.

As reported in WorldNetDaily, Larry King, near the end of the broadcast, asked Fox a question e-mailed from a listener: "I would like to know how you feel about the possibility of having a Latin America united with one currency"

Fox answered in the affirmative, admitting he and George W. Bush had "agreed" to pursue the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas – a free-trade zone extending throughout the Western Hemisphere – and that part of the plan was to institute a regional currency from Canada to the tip of South America!

IRS Suffers Defeat

IRS Suffers Staggering Defeat in Kahre tax trial. Tax Questions Raised Regarding Gold and Silver Coins Used to Pay Wages

Around noon on Monday, September 17th, a Las Vegas federal jury returned its verdict refusing to convict nine defendants of any of the 161 federal tax crimes they had been charged with. The charges included income tax evasion, willful failure to file and conspiracy to evade taxes.

The four-month trial centered around the family businesses of Robert Kahre who paid numerous workers for their labor with circulating gold and silver U.S. coins, and did not report the wages. The payments took place over several years, allegedly totaling at least $114 million dollars.

On September 20, 2007, three days after the federal trial's dramatic conclusion, the Las Vegas Review Journal, reportedly under a degree of public pressure, ran its first (and last) story about the outcome of the trial. To this day, with exception of the single article by the Review Journal, no major media entity has published a news story regarding the outcome of this important federal criminal tax case.

The censorship of this important news story is, unfortunately, not unexpected given the continuing, worldwide onslaught against the U.S. "dollar" -- specifically the Federal Reserve variety, and the ever growing numbers of Federal Reserve Notes required to trade for an actual ounce of silver, gold, oil, or for that matter, anything.

In short, this failed prosecution has coalesced and exposed truths our Government desperately needs to hide from the People: the truth about our money, the truth about our (privately-owned) central bank, and the truth about the fraudulent nature of the operation and enforcement of the federal income tax system.

Wiki the vote - Congress 2008

Congresspedia Profiles Congressional Candidates in the 2008 Election

On Tuesday, the Center for Media and Democracy and the Sunlight Foundation launched a new collaborative, citizen-driven project on Congresspedia to build profiles on the hundreds of challengers for congressional seats, which will compliment the existing profiles on every member of Congress. The project is non-partisan and, in true open-source fashion, is free for anyone to participate -- even the candidates themselves.

Even for official party nominees, information on challengers is usually woefully inadequate and information on primary challengers is often nearly non-existent. The explosion of citizen blogging in the last few years has created a wealth of individual opinions and perspectives, but what has been lacking is a central repository of collaboratively produced, in-depth and accurate information. The Wiki the Vote project, due to its easily editable wiki format, will be just that.

Did White House Lie About Solution Provider's Role in Loss of 5 Million E-mails?

When Congress asked about 5 million executive branch e-mails that went missing, a White House lawyer pointed the finger at an outside IT contractor.

The only problem? No such IT contractor exists, according to sources close to the investigation of a possible violation of the Federal Records and Presidential Records acts.

White House Office of Administration (OA) Deputy General Counsel Keith Roberts told the House Oversight Committee on May 29 that "an unidentified company working for the Information Assurance (IA) Directorate of the Office of the Chief Information Officer was responsible for daily audits of the e-mail system and the e-mail archiving process," according to committee chair Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. That briefing came about after it was confirmed by the White House in April that millions of e-mails had vanished from Executive Office of the President (EOP) archives from 2003-2005.

11/9 Warmup for 12/7 National Caucus

When it comes to choosing our Presidential candidates, why does Iowa take priority over the rest of the country?

The National Presidential Caucus was created to give citizens across the country - Democrats, Republicans, and Independents - a chance to gather in small groups (up to 50 people) to discuss the candidates and vote.

Of course this vote is informal and will not choose any delegates for the convention. But it will get a lot of media coverage and will be a lot more meaningful than the polls - particularly for longer-shot candidates whose lower poll rankings reflects the Corporate Media's bias against them.

The full Caucus will be held on Friday December 7, using Meetup-style tools to help citizens connect. There will also be a Preliminary Straw Poll & Caucus Warmup on Friday, November 9, 2007

Democrats.com is a co-sponsor of the National Presidential Caucus. For more details:

George W. Bush v. The U.S. Constitution

From misleading the nation on its reasons for war to fighing an unending war on terror, the Bush administration threatens our Constitution and our freedom.

By Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.)

George W. Bush Versus the U.S. Constitution: The Downing Street Memos and Deception, Manipulation, Torture, Retribution, Coverups in the Iraq War and Illegal Domestic Spying

In July 2005, 122 members of Congress, along with more than 500,000 Americans, sent a letter to President George W. Bush, asking him to verify whether the assertions set forth in the so-called “Downing Street Minutes” were accurate. The president never responded.

That lack of response prompted Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, to commission his staff to write a report examining the administration’s manipulation and deception during the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq. When the New York Times reported in December 2005 that President Bush had approved widespread warrantless domestic surveillance of innocent Americans, (later corroborated in May 2006 by USA Today), Conyers asked his staff to document those abuses as well. The final report, “The Constitution In Crisis,” released in August with little attention from the mainstream media, is a compelling indictment of the Bush administration.

Universal health care in Wisconsin

In late June, the Wisconsin state senate ratified “Healthy Wisconsin,” a plan that is “the boldest and most comprehensive health care reform from any state,” according to the Progressive States Network

A rally in Madison, Wisc., in support of "Healthy Wisconsin"

With health care ranking near the top of voters’ concerns nationally, state politicians around the country have been taking action to provide better health insurance coverage. Some states have expanded existing plans, such as Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), despite the Bush administration’s resistance to both. Others, like Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts, have recently launched plans that combine both requiring and subsidizing insurance.

Tennessee's lethal injection ruled unconstitutional

A Federal judge has ruled that the state of Tennessee's lethal injection method of execution is unconstitutional:

U.S. District Judge Aleta Trauger's ruling on Wednesday said Tennessee's newly revised execution protocol left open the possibility that the lethal three-drug cocktail could present "a substantial risk of unnecessary pain," and was therefore unconstitutional.

It’s not surprising that Bush is hoping no one notices his veto, which will deny health coverage to four million children. Over 70 percent of Americans support Congress’s proposed SCHIP increase. Bush has stated that he opposes funding the program with revenue from cigarette taxes, even though such taxes are tied to decreases in smoking. Furthermore, the public overwhelmingly supports raising tobacco taxes, by a margin of 67 percent to 28 percent.

Byrd: Senate’s ‘Saber-Rattling’ Is ‘Sleep-Walking’ America To War With Iran

On the Senate floor today, Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) decried the recent Kyl-Lieberman amendment on Iran that 72 of his colleagues voted for, calling it an exercise in “international verbal spitball.” Byrd warned his colleagues against “sleep-walking” into another war, saying “I hope that we can stop this war of words before it becomes a war of bombs.”

Byrd added that the Senate’s “chest-pounding” and “saber-rattling” towards Iran was “deeply troubling,” as the Iraq war has shown “all too clearly where it leads”:

It is deeply troubling to see the U.S. Senate joining the chest-pounding and saber-rattling of the Bush administration. I am no apologist for the Iranian regime, anymore than I was for Saddam Hussein, but I fear that we may become entangled in another bloody quagmire. We have been down this path before. We have seen all too clearly where it leads.

Book Review - American Empire and the Commonwealth of God

By Jim Miles

The American Empire and the Commonwealth of God – A Political, Economic, Religious Statement. John Cobb, Richard Falk, David Griffin and Catherine Keller. Westminster John Knox Press, Louisville, Kentucky, 2006.

Based solely on the title, this book appeared to be something that could have some strong revelations on the nature of the American Empire and its relationship with religion. Having read several books from the religious right, including the first volume of the "Left Behind" series (summed up as a compilation of Star Wars, Harlequin Romance, and end of times theology), I thought this volume might have a more rational approach than the fear mongering and devilish rhetoric that saturates the right wing material.

John McCain and our Christian Nation

John McCain is at it again. This time out he’s arguing, in an interview with Beliefnet, that the Constitution established the US as a “Christian nation” and he comes dangerously close to suggesting that only a Christian would be fit to be president (in fact, he seems to say just that before waffling and backpedaling into an answer designed to draw a bit less fire).

Secessionists Meeting in Tennessee

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — In an unlikely marriage of desire to secede from the United States, two advocacy groups from opposite political traditions — New England and the South — are sitting down to talk.

Tired of foreign wars and what they consider right-wing courts, the Middlebury Institute wants liberal states like Vermont to be able to secede peacefully.

That sounds just fine to the League of the South, a conservative group that refuses to give up on Southern independence.

"We believe that an independent South, or Hawaii, Alaska, or Vermont would be better able to serve the interest of everybody, regardless of race or ethnicity," said Michael Hill of Killen, Ala., president of the League of the South.

Seymour Hersh is a well respected journalist whose articles in the New Yorker have led that part of the media whose mental agility has not been hobbled by corporate perspectives. He has correctly diagnosed the Iraq War, the Iraq Occupation and even the ultimate aim of CheneyBush to attack Iran. It is all the more interesting, therefore, that Mr. Hersh has chosen to hold back the obvious conclusion in his latest article on the switch being pulled by the CheneyBush administration on developing a casus belli—a cause for war—against Iran.

On health care - Kucinich's leftist views could satisfy Republicans, Democrats alike

I must admit I am pretty fickle when it comes to choosing whom I cast my vote for. I am not one of those one-issue people.

If someone says they are pro-choice, that doesn't mean they are going to get my vote. I like to take a look at the whole picture and ensure they support all of the same liberal-commie causes I do: universal health care, an end to the war in Iraq, renewable energy, ending poverty in the United States and repealing the Patriot Act.

These issues are pretty important to me. I like to think most Americans actually agree with me when it comes to these issues. And I also happen to the think the candidate who best addresses these issues is Dennis Kucinich.

John Edwards in the Slate mashup

Rose: Sen. Edwards, first on Iraq, give me your assessment of what Gen. Petraeus said and your opinion of whether he is accurate about the situation on the ground and what this administration is prepared to do next.

Edwards: My view about it is that both the administration and Gen. Petraeus are not focused on what is the only important question, which is, has there been political progress in Iraq? Because unless and until there's some political compromise between Sunni and Shia, there could not be stability in Iraq and the violence will continue. And instead of focusing on one small part of Iraq, Anbar province for example, where the Sunni tribal leadership has actually decided to work with America against al-Qaida, what we should be looking at is, has there been a political progress? Because without political progress, what's the purpose of us being here? I mean, what is the purpose of all the lives being lost? What's the purpose of now $500 billion and counting?

Rep. Dennis Kucinich answers questions in our presidential mashup.

Rose: Congressman Kucinich, welcome to "mashup," this online debate. Let me begin by talking about Iraq. We'll have three minutes for that. And three minutes health-care education. And three minutes for a wild card. I begin with Iraq. Gen. Petraeus has made his statement to Congress, answered questions. The president will apparently support him. Is anything the Congress can do and will do to change that strategy?

Kucinich: Well, are we forgetting something here? I mean, do we still have civilian leadership in the United States or have we torn that page out of our Constitution as well? The founders made it very clear that Congress under Article 1, Section 8 has the power of war. And Congress also has the power of the purse. Congress must tell the president now, "The war is over. Bring the troops home. Bring the equipment home. Force those mercenaries to come home. Get Halliburton out of there." I mean, Congress has the power, and they can take action now. We cannot to fund this war.

Gravel: Representative Government Is Broken

Sen. Mike Gravel answers questions in our presidential mashup.
From Slate

Rose: Sen. Gravel, the president has said that he's going to listen carefully to what Gen. Petraeus says and reports to him about the surge and what might be America's commitment in the future. What do you make of what Gen. Petraeus has said?

Gravel: I think it's a tragic charade where obviously one could predict what Petraeus was going to say three years ago on this particular subject. And then you get the president, who is the commander in chief, saying he's going to follow what the dictates or recommendations of Gen. Petraeus, who is making recommendations that the White House wanted. This is a very tragic charade. While human lives are lost because of the inability of this government to have any sense of moral commitment.

The US President pushed the envelope of the world's credulity even further by citing the UN's Universal Declaration of 1948 as justification for his "war on terror" and his draconian policies for eliminating "terrorists" or other threats to world order with little or no due process.

FCC chief hints at deregulation

On Sept. 20, Chicagoans packed into an auditorium to voice concerns about media consolidation before the leadership of the Federal Communications Commission.

Hundreds were there to urge the agency's five commissioners to foster more diversity over the air, by deciding to stop any further amassing of local TV, radio and newspaper outlets under a single corporate owner.

But it seems that this FCC decision has already been cast. During a meeting with Tribune editors earlier in the day, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin hinted very strongly that he plans to lift the existing "cross-ownership" ban that has been on the books for more than 30 years.

Such a change to the rules would unleash a new wave of consolidation in local markets.

Rock samples from deep within Yucca Mountain, in Nevada, showed that the fault runs directly beneath the site where the US federal government planned to store 77,000 tons of highly radioactive waste.

Bush to host 'greenwashing' climate summit

Sep. 27- For the first time in 16 years, a major environmental conference opens in Washington, hosted by the Bush administration. But no concrete results are expected, and that – say European participants – is the point of this high-level meeting.

Far from representing a Damascene conversion on climate change by President Bush, the two-day gathering of the world's biggest polluting nations is aimed at undermining the UN's efforts to tackle global warming, say European sources. "The conference was called at very short notice," said one participant. "It's a cynical exercise in destabilising the UN process."

Is Marriage Worth It?

Let’s get a grip on this marriage hype. Regardless of what the church says about its sanctity or what the court mandates in the recent Vermont Supreme Court decision extending its "privileges and benefits" to heretofore-free same-sex couples, marriage isn’t a wholly beneficial institution. Rather, wedlock is a contract, often blessed by the church and always enforced by the state. And both formidable authorities have a compelling interest in this particular bargain, since it regulates the sexual activities of adults - mainly women.

Top 20 Logical Fallacies

Presented by The Skeptics Guide to the Universe

What is a logical fallacy?

All arguments have the same basic structure: A therefore B. They begin with one or more premises (A), which is a fact or assumption upon which the argument is based. They then apply a logical principle (therefore) to arrive at a conclusion (B).

An example of a logical principle is that of equivalence. For example, if you begin with the premises that A=B and B=C, you can apply the logical principle of equivalence to conclude that A=C. A logical fallacy is a false or incorrect logical principle.

An argument that is based upon a logical fallacy is therefore not valid. It is important to note that if the logic of an argument is valid then the conclusion must also be valid, which means that if the premises are all true then the conclusion must also be true. Valid logic applied to one or more false premises, however, leads to an invalid argument. Also, if an argument is not valid the conclusion may, by chance, still be true.

Bush White House checks in with rapture Christians regarding Middle East policy.

The problem is not that George W. Bush is discussing policy with people who press right-wing solutions to achieve peace in the Middle East, or with devout Christians. It is that he is discussing policy with Christians who might not care about peace at all at least until the rapture.

It demonstrates, he says, "the absolute convergence of the neoconservatives with the Christian Zionists and the pro-Israel lobby, driving U.S. Mideast policy."

China unleashes cautious giant onto world's financial markets

BEIJING (AFP) — There was no champagne, no music, and just a few young women in traditional dresses.

The low-key ceremony that marked the launch of China Investment Corp. this weekend could reflect the cautious manner in which Beijing intends to unleash the largest fund in history onto the world's financial markets.

The much-anticipated corporation will be in charge of 200 billion dollars -- nearly one-sixth the nation's enormous forex reserves -- but it will not flaunt its wealth, observers said.

Report: U.S. shifts emphasis in possible confrontation with Iran

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Bush administration is shifting emphasis from the plan of a broad bombing attack to "surgical" strikes on Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps facilities in its strategy of possible military confrontation with Iran, the New Yorker said in an on-line report Sunday.

The Bush administration has come to conclusion that many of America's problems in Iraq are the responsibility of Teheran, then the solution to them is to confront Iran, the report said.

IRAN: USA TO HIT PASDARAN INSTEAD OF NUCLEAR INSTALLATIONS

(AGI) - Washington, Oct 1 - The US has changed its plans for a possible attack against Iran: the new objectives are the bases of Pashdaran, backbone of the armed forces of Teheran, and no longer the installations of the controversial nuclear programme of the Islamic Republic.

This is reported by the 'New Yorker', whose investigator Seymour Hersh, in the past responsible for important scoops, cites confidential Pentagon sources. George W. Bush has asked the United General Staff, the top of the armed forces, to revise the plans for an eventual operation against Iran focusing on "precision" attacks with cruise missiles against the bases of 125,000 men of the corps of 'Guards of the Revolution'. The Pasdaran are accused by US intelligence of organising resistance of Shia Iraqi militiamen through the elite troops of 'Quds' forces.

Hersh: Bush admin planning ’surgical’ strikes in Iran

The president is connecting Iran to attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq. Cheney’s rhetoric is becoming more strident. Senate Republicans and a few too many Dems have labeled Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as “terrorists.” Freedom’s Watch is considering a national advertising campaign focused on Iran, comparing Ahmadinejad to Hitler, and hoping to convince Americans that Iran will try to destroy the United States and Israel.

The New Yorker’s Seymour Hersh explains that this isn’t an accident. If his sources are right, plans for a military confrontation with Iran are moving forward apace.

Illegal immigration of Americans to Canada.

Liberals have a sense of humor.

From the Manitoba Herald, Canada (a very underground paper)

The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. The actions of President Bush are prompting the exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they'll soon be required to hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O'Reilly.
